Owl Banding

WPBO has conducted seasonal owl banding for over three decades. There are currently three owl banding seasons: spring, summer, and fall. Owl banding runs nightly in the spring from March 15-May 31, in the summer from July 1-August 25, and in the fall from September 15-October 31. Check this blog during the owl banding seasons to learn more about this research effort and to see photos of the owls banded!

Owl Update 4/1/2021

After experiencing a nice stretch of productive weather conditions prior to our last post, the recent weather patterns have regularly slowed down migration, if not shut us down altogether. That said, we did have a few windows when Northern Saw-whet Owls were on the move between periods of high winds and snow. Most notably, [...]

Owl Banding Update 3/25/2021

When you're working with migratory birds at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory in mid-March, your efforts are naturally going to produce results that vary significantly from year to year. We experienced a relatively mild winter this year, and our early season efforts are paying off. Northern Saw-whet Owls have continued to come through in steady [...]

The Spring Owl Banding Begins

As always, Nova Mackentley and I are excited for the start of the owl banding season. It's hard to believe, but this is my 20th spring owl banding season at WPBO, and Nova is only a few seasons behind me. We don't have much to report yet, but after a couple of nights of [...]

Owl Update 10/28/20

The owl banding season is coming to a close, and it started to feel like it this week. Nighttime temperatures dropped below freezing multiple times, and the rain that kept nets closed earlier this month has begun to turn to snow and sleet. The owls are still moving, but migration here at the Point [...]

Owl Update 10/14/20

It’s been another windy week here at the Point! Another stretch of strong winds kept nets closed several of the past few nights. We had been averaging over 50 new Northern Saw-whet Owl banded each of the first three weeks of the season. We didn’t quite make it this week, but we came close! [...]

Owl Update 9/30/20

Welcome back! It’s been an exciting week since our last update. The week was full of season firsts, starting with our first Long-eared Owl! That same night (Sept. 22), we also caught our first bird with retained juvenile plumage. This particular bird was starting to show the streaky brown and white breast feathers seen [...]

Fall Owl Banding 2020 Begins

The first Northern Saw-whet Owl banded this fall. Hi everyone!  We’re Kate and Eliana, the owl banders this fall. We’d like to introduce ourselves, but first, let’s get to the reason why we’re all here: the owls.   The fall banding season had an auspicious beginning with six Northern Saw-whet Owls caught prior [...]
