Owl Banding

WPBO has conducted seasonal owl banding for over three decades. There are currently three owl banding seasons: spring, summer, and fall. Owl banding runs nightly in the spring from March 15-May 31, in the summer from July 1-August 25, and in the fall from September 15-October 31. Check this blog during the owl banding seasons to learn more about this research effort and to see photos of the owls banded!

Owl Banding Update: October 20–26

A Barred Owl banded in the fall of 2018 at WPBO. Well, this week's weather consisted of long cold nights of wet and windy weather, and we only banded one Barred Owl. The last few nights of the season look decent for owl migration, so we'll see what happens. ~ Tim Baerwald [...]

Owl Banding Update: October 13-19

The night of the 14th featured a nice flight with 11 Northern Saw-whet Owls and a Long-eared Owl banded. Since then, likely due to wet and windy conditions, we have only banded 10 more owls, peaking with five Northern Saw-whet Owls on the night of the 18th and three Northern Saw-whet Owls and one [...]

Owl Banding Update: October 6–12

The night of the sixth featured the second-largest flight of the season with 12 Northern Saw-whet Owls banded! Since then (likely due to wet weather conditions), we have banded only nine more Northern Saw-whet Owls. The local amphibians have been enjoying the wet woods. ~ Tim Baerwald and Byron de-Yampert You can [...]

Owl Banding Update: September 29–October 5

Northern Saw-whet Owl This week was a bit of a rollercoaster with a night where we banded zero owls followed by a night where we banded 15 Northern Saw-whet Owls! Other notes of interest include having recaptures of two Northern Saw-whet Owls previously banded here in 2019! The first was banded during [...]

Owl Banding Update: September 22–28

Long-eared Owl The week started off slow as a weather system brought wind and rain to Whitefish Point, causing us to shut down early and start late on multiple nights. Our luck turned a corner on Sunday — the breeze lightened, and the weather cleared, allowing us to capture six Northern Saw-whet Owls, [...]

Owl Banding Updates: Sept 15-21

The fall owl banding began the night of Sept. 15 with four Northern Saw-whet Owls banded — a nice start to the season. Since then, only two Northern Saw-whet Owls have been banded, for a first week total of six. This can likely be attributed to the south winds that have been prevalent the [...]

Owl Update 8/18/2021

Although we continue to see a general slow down, we did band 24 juvenile Northern Saw-whet Owls on August 11, which is a productive mid-August night. More recently, a warm-weather system has settled over us, and the numbers have been dropping night by night. The forecast calls for this system to linger a few [...]

Owl Update 8-11-2021

We experienced the first real slow down of the summer this past week, including our first night with no owls. It's not unexpected for the owls to slow down significantly at this time of the year. However, the weather conditions have not been good recently, leaving us wondering if the migration is winding down [...]

Owl Update 8-4-2021

Varying weather conditions have created some stops and starts to the owl migration recently, but overall it was another productive week. The few adults we are still catching are in various stages of molt. The one pictured in this blog has dropped its tail feathers. You can see the fluffy, white undertail coverts poking [...]

Owl Update 7/28/2021

Although we are still catching the occasional adult Northern Saw-whet Owl (NSWO), the juveniles have effectively taken over. Since our last post, we have banded 107 juvenile NSWO and just three adults. We had two severe storm fronts come through this past week, and the juveniles were really moving between those two systems. During [...]
