Owl Banding

WPBO has conducted seasonal owl banding for over three decades. There are currently three owl banding seasons: spring, summer, and fall. Owl banding runs nightly in the spring from March 15-May 31, in the summer from July 1-August 25, and in the fall from September 15-October 31. Check this blog during the owl banding seasons to learn more about this research effort and to see photos of the owls banded!

Warm fall nights…

On Sunday Raina and I got stuck mediating a debate of our own...between two Barred Owls. It was quite a raucous, nobody could figure out who was cooking for who. Both owls were pretty adamant they were "cooking for all." It was just a chaotic seen (actually both owls were pleasantly calm for barreds)!   [...]

Night-time critters

Sometimes it feels like a completely different world being out here in the darkness; very dream-like. You get to see things and hear things you might not always see or hear when the sun is up which of course helps us stay awake. These night-time critters that occasionally greet us are fascinating, to say the [...]

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind. In the last 16 nights, we have banded 93 Saw-whets and [...]

Owl Update 4/22

Things have been going pretty well recently. As we mentioned in our first post, the first 11 nights in April were pretty brutal due to the return of winter conditions and we banded just two owls during that span. The weather conditions finally improved on April 12 and we had very a nice run of [...]

Owl Update April 15

Before we jump into the owls, we want to give a quick mention of what has been going on at WPBO. After the announcement at last year's Spring Fling that Michigan Audubon Society (MAS) would be taking over operations at WPBO this transition became a regular topic of conversation at the Point. The departure of [...]
