The week began with two great BROAD-WINGED HAWK flights on May 8 and 9, with 1,840 and 2,400 migrants, respectively, being documented throughout both days. This was the largest push of broad-wings so far this season and will likely be the peak as numbers have begun to taper off. The season total sits at 7,910 as of today (May 15), which is the highest species season total so far since spring 2000.

On May 10, a SWAINSON’S HAWK was spotted spiraling south of the hawk deck and was also spotted by several visitors at the waterbird count. It was a fun western raptor rarity for the Point.

On May 15, a BLACK VULTURE was seen mixing in with a group of TURKEY VULTURES during a blustery day of western winds.

With two weeks remaining in the spring raptor count, come up to the Point and enjoy some great raptor movement north.
